SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
Project Healthcare at the Bellevue Emergency Department through NYU

“Project Healthcare (PHC) is an immersive and intensive summer volunteer program for enthusiastic, inspired, and dedicated undergraduate, graduate, recent graduates (within 2 years) and post-baccalaureate students interested in healthcare. PHC offers a comprehensive view into emergency medicine, providing participants with a unique and authentic healthcare experience, and the exposure they need to make educated career choices. Participants rotate through various clinical areas of the Bellevue Hospital Emergency Department: Adult, Pediatric, and Psychiatric Emergency Rooms; Emergency Ward/Trauma ICU; Urgent Care; Social Work offices; Operating Room; Cardiac Catheterization Lab; and join the FDNY for an ambulance ride-along. At the start of the program, participants are paired with a Resident Mentor, whom they shadow and gain professional guidance from throughout the summer. “ ~ NYU School of Medicine

If you are considering an application for the 2019 entrance to medical, dental, or veterinary school, plan to attend this annual Health Professions Essential information session. You will receive an overview of the application process, the information you need in order to file a request for a “committee letter” from the Wesleyan Health Professions Panel, and suggestions for how to assess the strength of your candidacy.

Applying to health professions graduate programs requires: advance planning, a clear sense of the required timeline, knowledge of how the process works, understanding how your metrics are taken into consideration along with other the other criteria that are assessed to measure your competitiveness, and thoughtful consideration regarding from whom you will be requesting your individual letters of recommendation.

Unless you have a class, you should make every effort to attend this meeting, even if you are only able to attend the first half hour.

The Health Professions Mock Medical Interview Workshop

A mock interview is one of the best ways to refine your interview skills and gain a sense of what sort of questions you might be asked during an interview with the admissions board. The first 30 minutes of this workshop will consist of two one-on-one interviews and the remaining 45 minute discussion will cover what went well, discuss and feedback from the students attending the workshop, review recommendations on how to improve an interview performance, provide other relevant information regarding medical school interviews, and address questions from the audience. Please come ready to offer commentary!

The Jefferson Step-Up Program

“The Jefferson Summer Training and Enrichment Program for Underrepresented Persons (JeffSTEP-UP) in medicine is an intensive program aimed at pre-medical college and college graduate students who are underrepresented in medicine and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds intending to apply to medical College.
The objective of the program is to provide those who are about to apply to medical school with a comprehensive and concentrated experience aimed at enhancing their qualifications to successfully apply. It is an eight-week, 40 hours per week program held in the summer.” The deadline is 1 February 2018. Hartford Hospital Summer Student Pre-Med and Research Program
This program is for third year students and will include research, patient care, exposure to health care providers with diverse specialties, ethical issues in medicine and an introduction to a large teaching hospital environment. Applications will be due at the start of February. This program includes a stipend.

Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)

Formerly known as the Summer Medical and Dental Program, the SHPEP expanded in 2016 to include a broader array of health professions.  “SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools. These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.”
The application becomes available on 1 November 2017 and the deadline is 1 March 2018
To be eligible for SHPEP, an applicant must: (1) be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual granted deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, (2) be a college freshman or sophomore at the time of application; and (3) have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Courier Summer Internship for Nurse-Midwifery and Public Health at Frontier Nursing University
“In 1928, Mary Breckinridge, founder of Frontier Nursing University established the Courier Program, recruiting young people to come work in the Kentucky Mountains and learn about service to humanity. Eligible applicants should be interested in learning about public health, health care, social work and related fields, share a commitment to Frontier’s mission of serving the rural and underserved and be ready for an adventure! Formal training or educational background in healthcare is not required. Responsibilities will vary by site. At all of our sites, you will: (1) Complete a Community Health Profile, paying particular attention to health equity issues, (2) Shadow clinicians in their work with patients, (3) Perform volunteer duties to meet critical clinical needs, and (4) Engage directly with the community through secondary project(s)” ~Courier Program.
