Here’s the scoop:

· The College of the Environment (COE) Internship Program allows students to undertake research on environmental topics under the guidance of a faculty mentor during summer or fall and spring semesters. The projects must relate to any of the broad themes covered by Environmental Studies and the College of the Environment. The scope of environmental topics is intended to be interpreted broadly; research may be undertaken using techniques, approaches, and paradigms from all majors or major programs. Internships are available to all Wesleyan students, regardless of class year or major. The internships may be undertaken at Wesleyan or off-campus.

· Some examples of COE-supported internships might include: working on an organic farm in California, conducting research in a science lab at Wesleyan, undertaking an environmental justice art project in Costa Rica, researching the economics of a carbon tax with a professor at Wesleyan.

· Summer internships are typically 10 weeks in length and can run anytime between the beginning and end of summer break. Summer internships that involve working directly with a Wesleyan faculty member generally run from mid-May to June 30. Fall and spring semester internships run for the duration of the semester and typically involve working with a Wesleyan faculty member or a local organization. Fall internships may extend into the spring semester but spring internships must be completed in the spring semester.

· The student application must include two short letters of recommendation. In addition to recommending the student, the faculty mentor must briefly (1-2 paragraphs) explain the project, its importance and relevance to her/his research program.

· All COE summer internships carry a stipend of $4,400. This amount is based upon the summer program of 10 weeks and 40 hours per week. Fall and spring semester amounts will vary based upon duration and hours per week spent on research.
